Mario Kart Tour
The fourth mobile version of the Nintendo catalog, after Animal Crossing, Super Mario Run, and Dr. Mario World, Mario Kart Tour was perhaps also the most anticipated. The phenomenal success of this wacky racing series where banana skins and turtle shells follow on from controlled skids and turbo starts is well established. Transposed to the reduced screen of a smartphone, it, fortunately, retains all its flavor. You operate your kart with one finger, adjusting the skids and borrowing springboards or throwing all the emblematic weapons of the saga. A treat, after some adaptation time!
Beyond the most emblematic races of the console versions, reproduced with great detail, there are many new circuits and challenges. Gathered in the form of “seasons” exploring the four corners of the world (New York, Tokyo, and soon Paris), these give you stars if you win. It’s up to you to accumulate them, to access the following races, or unlock any type of bonus. Of course, you are constantly reminded of the existence of a “gold pass” at $6.38 per month (to access 200cc mode and other bonuses), but you can fully enjoy the game without spending a penny.
A very successful transposition of the cult kart game, Mario Kart Tour benefits from a splendid achievement. You very quickly find the sensations worthy of console games, with handling intelligently adapted to the screen of a smartphone. The selection of races is particularly wide, with some new circuits and the most popular races from previous versions. The challenge system, updated every two weeks, also offers challenges. Nintendo only has to integrate a “real” multiplayer mode, to make it the ultimate edition of the series!
Real Racing 3
Able to put a powerful smartphone to the test, Real Racing 3 is a demanding car simulation that puts you behind the wheel of real cars on nearly forty international circuits. Single-player or multiplayer competitions where you will face up to eight friends, the title is surprisingly complete and shines with its attention to detail. The gameplay is excellent and you will progress quickly, improving your vehicles in the process.
A true benchmark for car simulation on smartphones, Real Racing 3 continues to establish itself as the most complete title for all those keen on the smallest detail. The graphics engine is particularly impressive, with very precise physics management. The content is rich, with many models and manufacturers represented, as well as real circuits. But paid content remains strongly emphasized.
For several years, the Asphalt license has been the benchmark for smartphone racing games. Released in February 2018, Asphalt Xtreme is the last real opus in the saga of Gameloft, without counting Street Storm, which simply asks the player to change gears at the right time. Xtreme takes the gameplay of Asphalt 8, but this time allows you to visit very different settings, in quarries, deserts, warehouses, or in the mountains. As usual, as you win races you will earn credits that will allow you to improve your vehicle or unlock new ones.
Asphalt Xtreme does credit to the series, even if the game does not innovate radically in terms of graphics rendering. The sets and the lights remain pleasing to the eye. The gameplay is also quite pleasant with gyroscopic movement management and the arcade aspect, thanks to the boosts, makes it a pleasant game to learn. Too bad, however, that the mechanics of free-to-play are also present.
For the first time in 2014, Ubisoft decided to port its famous motocross license to smartphones. Trials Frontier offers you the opportunity to complete each more wacky course than the next using your motorbike. On the right of the screen, two arrows allow you to move forward or backward. On the left, two other arrows allow you to choose the inclination of the rider by tilting him forwards or backward.
If the gameplay of Trials is now classic, the Frontier version adds a little scripted side rather well felt. The game also offers to gradually improve his motorcycle using the parts collected in the different levels.
Asphalt 8 Airborne
The Asphalt racing game series has had a great smartphone career, since its first installment on the late N-Gage, just 10 years ago. The eighth episode always offers more vehicles, in even more diverse environments. The graphics, without reaching the work of Real Racing 3, are very clean and colorful. “In-app” purchases are unfortunately particularly emphasized, but the game being free and the progression possible (but slow) without going through the cash register, a good balance is finally found. Gameplay is no problem, whether with the accelerometer or with touch keys.
Car and arcade racing enthusiasts will be in heaven with this new Asphalt. The garage has something to dream of, with brands such as BMW, Mercedes, and Lamborghini, and the arcade gameplay allows you to immediately enjoy the pleasure of the game. Too bad, however, that the purchases are so present.
If you are looking for a racing game that is out of the ordinary, Pako Forever might be for you! This time, try to escape the police, learn to control your vehicle by turning left to right, and be careful not to get caught by your pursuers.
Pako forever offers original gameplay, a lot of maps, and different cars, enough to keep you busy for a while. In addition, the graphics of the game are beautiful and will only improve your experience. We can hope in the future for new game modes or simply improvements to the current mode. Pako Forever is an excellent chase game and will be perfect if you are looking for a more arcade-type game. Just beware, Pako forever is somewhat complicated. Getting started is easy but the challenge is high, and you will have to practice if you hope to unlock all the cars available.
Among the immensity of existing racing games, cars don’t have to be the center of attention all the time. The legendary Sonic saga comes to the phone and offers you a running game with all the cult characters of the license. Subway surfing gameplay, tons of iconic characters to unlock, all wrapped up in cool graphics and you’ve got Sonic Forces !
Despite the commercial failure of its console version, this mobile version will reach a wider audience. Sonic Forces offers simple gameplay mixing running and fighting, which will prove to be quite addicting. We also appreciate that the game is constantly updated by the developers; there will always be new characters to unlock, or new races to run regularly. However, being a free game Sonic Forces is no exception to the rule and unfortunately offers too many in-game transactions that allow you to buy characters and others. Despite everything the game remains pleasant without spending a penny, it is however a pity that some players can get ahead simply by paying more than others.
This racing game is out of the ordinary and offers you a walk in the middle of magnificent landscapes all over the world. Of course, you are not in competition with other players, but you will enjoy browsing the different circuits offered while trying to survive as long as possible. Drive amid the various routes on offer ranging from Japan to the vast plains of Arizona to Western airs via the planet Mars. Adapt your driving to the car you choose from among the dozens of collection cars on offer, each with its specific characteristics and driving styles.
In addition to having very intuitive handling, the gameplay is simple but effective. We regret several roads and cars that are still quite low, which deserves to be further expanded to allow a longer lifespan. But the graphics are gorgeous and make #Drive a must-see nugget.
In addition, updates are carried out very regularly by the developers, which ensures you an always improved experience.
